Just outside the gates of the city of Torgau, like a green belt around the largest pond in Saxony, lies the recreation area and nature reserve “Großer Teich Torgau”. The pond created 500 years ago for the electoral court’s fishing industry is an important breeding and resting area for many bird species.
In the middle of this natural idyll, directly on the Great Pond, the nature conservation station “Biberhof Torgau” of the NABU Landesverbandes Sachsen e. V. its registered office.
From children and young people who visit the station as part of hiking and project days, to ornithologists and species specialists who use it for specialist meetings, to excursion groups, walkers and spontaneous visitors, everyone is welcome at the Biberhof.
On joint excursions to the pond area and the nearby beaver area, visitors can explore, observe and identify the animal and plant world. Knowledge of species, ecological relationships as well as practical measures and conflicts in nature conservation are taught to them in an age-appropriate manner. In addition, they learn more about current nature and environmental issues at lectures and project events. An extensive exhibition of animal preparations, nesting boxes and aids, numerous nature literature in the house and a near-natural garden with a clay oven complete the offers of the station.
A highlight of the event is the autumn festival in the Biberhof, which takes place every year on the first weekend in November as part of the fishing of the Great Pond.
Before your visit, please find out about the opening hours of the Biberhof.
