Protestant Church Music Week

Torgau is considered the cradle of Protestant church music. This is where the Torgau-born cantor and friend of Martin Luther, Johann Walter, founded the first lay choir that would become a model for Lutheran choristry. Good, sophisticated church music is still produced in Torgau to this day. The Protestant Church Music Week has taken place every year in June since the early 1980s, and the organ night has always been a highlight on the Friday. Concerts are held by world-class artists at St. Mary’s Church and the castle church.
