A Photo Exhibition – The Name “Torgau” Resonated around the World in April 1945
This photo exhibition features around 50 large-format, little-known historical pictures, depicting the movements of three armies – the US Army, the Wehrmacht and the Red Army – along the Elbe and Mulde at the end of the war in 1945. The rare images presented at the photo exhibition document the path taken by the American military patrols to the Soviets on the eastern banks of the Elbe. They provide evidence that the encounters between the Russians and Americans were not short of tension and prejudice. It was the encounters between the “ordinary people” from both armies that revealed their frequently described sympathy, sensitivity and longing for peace.
