Johann Frederick the Magnanimous – The Last Ernestine Elector

The permanent exhibition in the electoral chambers of Hartenfels Castle offers an outstanding museum experience that highlights the importance of Torgau as the political centre of the Reformation and a place of courtly representation on the European stage. The exhibition is centred around the Elector Johann Frederick the Magnanimous and his wife Sibylle of Cleves. The last Ernestine Elector resided in Torgau from 1532 to 1547 and paved the way for Martin Luther and his teachings. The carefully restored buildings and innovative media offer a vivid impression of what life was like at the royal court in Torgau as part of the Electorate of Saxony.
